Bubba Wallace Makes Big Admission With Garage 'Noose' Incident

Back in 2020, it seemed like NASCAR Cup Series driver Bubba Wallace was the victim of a hate crime. That's because his garage door at Talladega Superspeedway had pull rope fashioned like a noose.

Wallace, the only Black full-time driver in the Cup Series, was understandably shaken by this situation. However, the FBI learned that his garage pull rope was there before he ever showed up to Talladega.

"The FBI report concludes, and photographic evidence confirms, that the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been positioned there since as early as last fall," NASCAR said in June 2020. "This was obviously well before the 43 team's arrival and garage assignment. We appreciate the FBI's quick and thorough investigation and are thankful to learn that this was not an intentional, racist act against Bubba. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all who love racing."

Roughly five years later, Wallace opened up about this incident from the 2020 season during an appearance on "The Breakfast Club" on 105.1 FM.

"It was there before we got there. It was just a coincidence that I had that garage. It's wild," Wallace said. "You know, it's still a topic of discussion to this day. If you see my Twitter mentions, people are still going about it. But it was there before I got there. It was just a coincidence I was in that garage. It is what it is. We've moved on from it, but it sucks the sport was put in that situation. It sucks that my team was put in this situation. We've learned a lot about who we are as a sport and who we are as competitors."

Wallace then admit that it was tough rebounding from this incident. Fans started booing him at every race. Some of that criticism was due to him successfully convincing NASCAR to ban Confederate flags from its venues.

"The year or two after that was rough. I went from being one of the most favorable drivers to getting booed. That's OK because it's sports."

At least Wallace seems to be much more prepared for handling scrutiny from NASCAR fans.

The Cup Series won't return to Talladega until April 27. The next race will take place at Darlington Raceway.

Wallace is currently in ninth place in the Cup Series standings.
