Anthony Edwards has been a focal point for the Minnesota Timberwolves since getting picked first in the 2020 NBA Draft. He was not alone because, during his rookie year, he already had teammates who were part of the young core, which included Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels.

While most people know Edwards is the Timberwolves' superstar, he wants everyone to know that he has not been alone in this journey. Since he started his NBA career, Reid and McDaniels have been with him every step of the way.

The Timberwolves were once one of the worst teams in the league before Edwards' arrival. In the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season, the Timberwolves had the second-worst record in the Western Conference at 19-45.

Minnesota is thankful they got a superstar out of in the Draft Lottery, as they won the first overall pick that was used for Ant. Fast-forward five years later, and the Timberwolves are a perennial Playoff team because of Edwards and his supporting cast which includes fellow 2020 draftee Jaden McDaniels.

Edwards' Journey With Reid And McDaniels

As the three players who have been with the Timberwolves for the longest time, Edwards, Reid, and McDaniels have a strong connection. They have gone through everything together, going from being one of the weakest teams in the league to becoming a formidable Playoff team.

They have all become successful players, as Reid won Sixth Man of the Year in the 2023-24 season, while McDaniels is an elite defender who was part of the All-Defensive Second Team in 2024. From the trio, Edwards stands out with his three NBA All-Star nods and being part of the All-NBA Second Team in 2024.

"I came in with Jaden so it means a lot to have him as a running mate… like I said, when he plays with ultra confidence we’re hard to beat," Ant said after practice on Tuesday. "Naz is a great player as long as he don’t overthink and just be himself out there, I have ultra confidence in his game too."

The Trio Can Continue Succeeding With Minnesota

Since they have been playing together for a long time, most people expect them to continue being with the Timberwolves. Edwards and McDaniels are already on long-term contracts, but Reid will likely decline his player option to become a free agent in the 2025 season.

He will be an unrestricted free agent, but he can still return to the Timberwolves. If he does, they will keep being a good trio of building blocks because they all have significant roles on the team.

The Timberwolves are set to stay competitive as long as they have their core. This 2024-25 season has not been the best, especially when compared to the previous campaign, but there is a lot to be proud of.

For Edwards, that has been the progress they have achieved through the years. He is happy to say that he has not done it alone because he grew up in the league alongside them.
