In 2018, NBA scouts touted Trae Young as a disciple of Steve Nash and Stephen Curry. However, the Atlanta Hawks guard grew more into the former star than the latter. Wednesday's matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Hawks reunites the Curry-lite comparison at the Chase Center. Can Young keep up with the superstar, perhaps unfairly attached due to pre-NBA comparisons?
Outside of the Curry-Young comparisons, the Warriors-Hawks matchup offers a variety of reasons to watch. Firstly, the Warriors are coming off a nail-biting 102-99 loss to the Clippers on Monday. Following such a loss, the Warriors will return home looking to body their next opponent.
The idea of Young playing similarly to Curry's stops st he attempts a high volume of 3s but doesn't make them like Curry does.
Young is averaging a below-average 35 percent 3-point clip on 8.8 attempts per game. However, Young excels in the Nash comparison. At 11.6 assists, Young can whip the ball at a successful rate, albeit in micro-stakes basketball. However, as the years with Dejounte Murray displayed, Young can't, or at least hasn't, succeeded in off-ball sequences.
Conversely, Curry doesn't need the ball to become one of the most dangerous players in NBA history.
Per Basketball-Reference, 61 percent of Curry's 3s derive from an assist, whereas 39 percent of Young's 3-point conversions occur on dimes. Ironically, Young's assisted on 3-point shots numbers dipped with Dejounte Murray in Atlanta's backcourt.
Curry's offense stands on more than shooting 3s at an overwhelming rate. The four-time NBA champion exemplifies maintaining superstardom without suctioning the ball and controlling every fabric of the offense. Perhaps Young will learn one day, but until then, he's stuck in "no man's land" with the Hawks.
