The New York Jets hierarchy has a host of roster decisions to make over the coming months, and while all eyes are on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, one of his best friends is in a similar boat.
Receiver Davante Adams, who came midseason from the Las Vegas Raiders, isn't a guarantee to return in 2025, and like Rodgers, the Jets might choose to part ways as part of this rebuild.
There are a lot of factors that will go into deciding if the Jets want Adams to return, and he showed at times last season that there's still juice left in the tank...but that juice is getting expensive.
As such, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler stated that Adams' contract is now untenable for the Jets, and they must move off him.
"The Jets must address the future of receiver Davante Adams, whose $38.3 million cap hit is untenable," Fowler writes. "A source told me Adams is intrigued by a return to the West Coast and would be open to potentially joining teams such as the Rams or Chargers -- if he gets released. I would put the 49ers in the conversation, too. Adams grew up in Northern California."
Adams came to New York in part due to the push from team leader and QB Aaron Rodgers, his good buddy from their days together with the Green Bay Packers.
But the Rodgers move to the Jets via a blockbuster trade two years ago hasn't worked.
And if the goal was any sort of contention? The move for Adams hasn't worked, either.
Per Over The Cap, if Adams was a pre-June 1 cut, New York would get cap savings of $29 million ($8 million dead money), but post-June 1, that jumps to $36 million ($2 million in dead money).
A trade is unlikely because who will want to fork out the salary for Adams' remaining years? Not many.
So the new management in New York is faced with a couple of monster decisions here. And cutting ties with the veteran Adams would be a decision that the Jets have to seriously look at over the next few weeks, even if Rodgers does return in 2025.
