The Washington Commanders shocked the NFL world by trading for San Francisco 49ers Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel late Saturday night. Washington only needed to surrender a fifth-round pick for Samuel to come to Washington. Samuel’s arrival gives the Washington Commanders one of the league’s most potent offenses.
Samuel joins a Commanders offense that includes Rookie of the Year Quarterback Jayden Daniels, Running Back Brian Robinson Jr., Wide Receiver Terry McLaurin, and Tight End Zach Ertz. Washington’s offense was great during the regular season but improved during the NFL Playoffs. The offense’s performances helped propel the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, their run ended there as the Eagles dominated them 55-23. Will this trade help put the Commanders over the top?

Washington added to the best part of its team with their first marquee offseason move. Adding Samuel made the team’s offense stronger. The Commandeers were reportedly looking to give Daniels another weapon heading into his sophomore season, and Samuel fits that bill. Washington’s offense should be even better in 2025.
The Commanders must still address their defense this offseason. Washington’s defense surrendered over 35 points per game during the NFL Playoffs. Luckily for them, the offense could overcome a poor defensive performance. The team will reportedly also look to trade Defensive Tackle Jonathan Allen this offseason. Allen was discussed as part of the package going back to the San Francisco 49rs in the Samuel deal. Allen was ultimately not included in the trade as the Washington Commanders will continue trying to trade the defender.
Samuel will only improve Washington’s offense in 2025. Even though he is not coming off a strong season, the change of scenery could work wonders for the former All-Pro. After being one of the league’s most surprising teams, the arrow is pointing up for the franchise.
