Dylan Holloway Loaned To Bakersfield Condors
Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

This morning, the Edmonton Oilers loaned forward Dylan Holloway to the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League.

The 22-year-old has 4 points in 32 games this season and makes $925k on his current entry-level contract. With this move, as posted by the Andy & Rono Twitter account, GM Ken Holland now has just a little over $2.1M in cap space leading up to tomorrow’s Trade Deadline. Remember that he needed to wait for Sam Gagner to clear waivers before pulling off the Henrique/Carrick trade yesterday. It’s still dreaming in technicolor to think it’s one of the biggest names that he’s after, but you can still get a pretty decent player with this amount of money freed up.

If this transaction really is signaling an upcoming trade, let’s hope it’s just the right amount of decent. We don’t know the sorts discussions managers have, I can only tell that Holloway just got himself a night off tonight.

Canadiens Make Last-Minute Change for Florida Game That Speaks Volumes About St-Louis

The Montreal Canadiens organization announced a small change of plans for today in preparation for the game against the Florida Panthers. It might seem trivial, but I think it speaks volumes about Martin St-Louis and the fact that he truly cares about his players. Originally, the team was supposed to practice at 10:30 AM this morning. However, as Max Truman mentions, the players arrived relatively late last night, especially when considering the time zone difference, so it wasn't ideal for them to have to practice at 10:30 AM this morning in Brossard. Probably 90% of NHL head coaches wouldn't have cared about this and would have stuck to their schedule, but not Martin St-Louis. The Canadiens push back today's practice by 1.5 hours to allow players to get more rest As the excellent Stu Cowan mentions, practice will now be at noon! 'The Canadiens will practice at noon on Friday at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard, in preparation for Saturday's game against the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre.' - Stu Cowan It's a nice little gesture from the organization and Martin St-Louis, which deserved to be highlighted here in my humble opinion. It's worth noting that the Habs will indeed face the Florida Panthers, who will be missing the services of defenseman Aaron Ekblad (suspension) and forward Matthew Tkachuk (injury), starting tomorrow live from the Bell Centre. It will be a very big game for the Canadiens.

Winners, losers from Thursday's NFL free agency: Steelers get a QB

The NFL offseason is officially under way with the beginning of the new league year this week. Let's take a look at some of the biggest winners and losers from Thursday's movement and deals. Winner: Mason Rudolph, quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers It is not the quarterback anybody was expecting or waiting for, but the Pittsburgh Steelers finally do, in fact, have signed a quarterback this offseason. They brought back Mason Rudolph, who already has an extensive history with the team on a two-year contract. It is a nice win for Rudolph because depending on what happens with the quarterback carousel in free agency he might actually have an opportunity to start and throw deep passes to DK Metcalf and George Pickens. If the Steelers bring in Aaron Rodgers, he still might get a chance to play later in the season if a 41-year-old Rodgers does not play in 17 games. Or play effectively. Either way, it is a very good spot for Rudolph. Loser: C.J. Stroud, quarterback, Houston Texans Good news for Stroud: the Texans have made some dramatic changes to their offensive line this offseason, hoping to address what was a massive issue and weakness during the 2024 season. Bad news for Stroud: they may have actually made the offensive line worse than it already was. Add in the trade of left tackle Laremy Tunsil and there are certainly some big questions remaining on the Texans offensive line. Winner: Jack Conklin, OT, Cleveland Browns The Browns re-worked the contract of the veteran tackle, giving him the opportunity to earn $12M this season after incentives, while also allowing him to hit free agency in 2026 instead of 2027. The win there for Conklin is that he gets his money this season, an opportunity to prove himself to be healthy over a full season, while also hitting free agency a year earlier when he can potentially get one more big payday in his career. Loser: Everybody waiting on Aaron Rodgers There are no winners here if you are in a position waiting for a 41-year-old quarterback, that might not be any good anymore, to make up his mind on where he is going to play this season. The Steelers, New York Giants and perhaps the Minnesota Vikings are all in a holding pattern waiting on how to move forward with their offseasons. Russell Wilson, presumably a backup option for the team that does not get Rodgers, is in a holding pattern waiting to see who might still want his services. The winner of this sweepstakes gets to pay big money to a quarterback that might be a bigger distraction than he is worth on the field. Everybody else gets to decide between Wilson, Jameis Winston and Joe Flacco. Winner: Gardner Minshew, quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs After spending the past two seasons in Indianapolis and Jacksonville, Minshew now gets an opportunity to be the backup for Patrick Mahomes after reportedly agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Minshew was pretty much always going to be a backup this season no matter where he went in free agency, but at least now he gets a chance to do so on a Super Bowl contender while still getting guaranteed money from the Raiders. Good deal all around for him.

'It's Pittsburgh 10 out of 10 times': Steelers fans get inspiring message as Aaron Rodgers could help organization turn the corner

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still trying to resolve their quarterback issue after the organization lost out on both Justin Fields and Sam Darnold during the legal tampering period of free agency. The organization's current top option is Aaron Rodgers, with Russell Wilson likely falling in somewhere behind him. Rodgers is speaking with both the Steelers and the New York Giants, and the quarterback is deciding where to go next as the NFL world awaits his decision. Rodgers had a rough couple of seasons with the New York Jets, and some believed the quarterback would retire after the 2024 season. He has made it clear he wants to continue playing, and he will likely be in either New York or Pittsburgh in 2025. The Steelers are the superior team and organization, but negotiations between the franchise and the veteran have not been going extremely well. Regardless of that, Kyle Brandt of "Good Morning Football" believes the decision should be a no-brainer for Rodgers. "If I'm Rodgers and I've got both these guys vying for me, I'm going to Pittsburgh," Brandt said. "I'm going to Pittsburgh. Why? Because the Giants to me, aside from the same stadium, the Giants feel like the Jets. We have a hungry coach who is likable and hasn't really gotten it done yet like we did last year, we got a very young, talented wide receiver like we did last year that everybody's talking about. I don't think there is much else there though. They haven't had their act together." Brandt believes Rodgers would be making the same mistake by deciding to stay in New York. It is all the same. Two of the worst franchises in the NFL over the last decade, and the Giants don't seem to have any optimism moving forward outside of Malik Nabers. Head coach Brian Daboll has had two consecutive unsuccessful seasons with New York after winning a playoff game his first year, but it is not a stable organization for Rodgers to end his career with. The Steelers aren't all that either as of late, but the organization is more stable and consistent than New York. Pittsburgh has been searching for an answer at quarterback ever since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, and Rodgers might be able to provide the best play at the position since 2021. Pittsburgh hasn't won a playoff game since the 2016 season, but Rodgers could be the quarterback to get that to change. Brandt continued to speak on why the veteran should choose Pittsburgh. "I'm going to Pittsburgh, because obviously the weapons are impressive," Brandt said. "Also, it's like immediately, is TJ Watt the best defensive player Rodgers has played with since Charles Woodson? Probably. I think Mike Tomlin is so different than Robert Saleh or Brian Daboll, a guy who is so established. He has a Super Bowl ring, he would have another one if it were not for Rodgers. I think the Steelers fans more than anything crave different. Please break the mold." The ceiling the Steelers would have with Rodgers is high, as the quarterback won the NFL's MVP Award as recently as 2021. He will probably play better than he did in New York due to the weapons Pittsburgh has and the consistency on the coaching staff. The expectations in Pittsburgh are also significantly different than in New York. Steelers Could Land A High Draft Pick With Aaron Rodgers Rodgers led the Jets to a 5-12 record during the 2024 season. This doesn't mean that will happen in Pittsburgh, but there is the possibility. Rodgers could take the offense to the next level, but he can also bottom out like he did in 2024 and struggle. Brandt spoke about this being beneficial for Pittsburgh. "This thing. This Rodgers thing," Brandt continued. "Maybe it is Vikings-era [Brett] Favre. Maybe it is Broncos-era Peyton Manning. Maybe they do catch fire and change this thing, or, maybe they go 5-12, and that might not be the worst thing going into next year. For once you can actually have a decent draft pick. It's Pittsburgh 10 out of 10 times." The veteran quarterback gives the Steelers a chance to succeed, while he also gives Pittsburgh a chance to finally be in a good spot when the 2026 NFL Draft rolls around. A large portion of the fan base has been begging for a decent draft pick, as the long stretch of non-losing seasons has kept Pittsburgh picking in the late-teens and early 20s. A higher pick gives Pittsburgh a better chance of fixing the quarterback problem.

Broncos Predicted to Sign 10,000-Yard WR in NFL Free Agency

It was a good season for the Denver Broncos, led by rookie quarterback Bo Nix, going 10-7, finishing third in the AFC West and making a playoff appearance, eventually losing to the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round 31-7. Much of their success can be attributed to the defense, ranking third in points per game allowed (18.3), with their offense needing some work, finishing 10th in points per game (25) and 19th in total yards per game (325.6). In order to help fix this, Dan Treacy predicts the Broncos will sign wide receiver Amari Cooper, who in his 10-year career has racked up 711 receptions, 10,033 yards and 64 touchdowns. "The Broncos are one of a few teams in the AFC West who could use a veteran receiver, and Denver can't just sit on its hands and not give [quarterback] Bo Nix any help," Treacy wrote. "Cooper would be a nice fit for Sean Payton's offense at the right price." Cooper is coming off a poor year with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns, appearing in 14 games and hitting career lows in targets (85), receptions (44), yards (547), and touchdowns (four). However, even those numbers would rival Marvin Mims Jr., who finished the season having the second-most yards (503), third-most receptions (39) and second-most touchdowns (six) of any Broncos wide receiver. Cooper will be 31 years old by the start of the 2025 season, and if he can return to being the same player who has reached at least 1,000 receiving yards seven times, he could become a reliable target for Nix.
