It’s locker cleanout day for the Calgary Flames, and one of the biggest news drops had to do around the recent play and performance of defenceman Rasmus Andersson. It was pretty obvious that he was playing hurt down the final stretch, and it was finally revealed by himself that he broke his fibula blocking a shot against the Seattle Kraken.

I broke my fibula against Seattle, yeah so I played [the] last what, 12 games with a broken fibula. So that felt great.
The Flames played the Kraken on March 25. Andersson did not sit out a single game until Game 82 against the Los Angeles Kings where the Flames were finally out of playoff contention. Including the game against Seattle, he played 12 games with the injury.
In those games, his load was hardly reduced at all, with him playing 26:03 versus the Colorado Avalanche and 20:00 at home against the Anaheim Ducks for respective time-on-ice highs and lows in his injured stretch.
Based on the fact that the Andersson took no games off, this might signal that the break wasn’t too serious and can heal appropriately with normal load—if you can call playing NHL-level hockey a normal load at all. Further, Andersson said he’s set to represent Sweden at the Worlds in May, so that’s another sign that the break is closer to minor than major on the spectrum of possible broken fibulas.
We’ll see what’s next for Andersson over the offseason and beyond, but for now, he’s earned a well-deserved break, one of the rest and recover variety.
