One of the top commits in the college basketball world and five-star prospect Alijah Arena was involved in a serious car crash on Thursday morning. The 18-year-old is the son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas and has been placed into an induced coma. Not many details have come out outside of the initial tweet by ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania, but this is an ongoing story that will have updates as more are released.
Alijah Arenas is expected to be one of the best college basketball players he is part of the Class of 2025 out of Chatsworth High School. He is ranked 13th in the ESPN 100 and elected to sign with the USC Trojans over the Arizona Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, Kentucky Wildcats, and Louisville Cardinals. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard averaged almost 31.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists throughout his high school career.
He officially committed to the Trojans earlier this year and recently announced he had a sponsorship deal with adidas inked. According to TMZ, emergency responders were at the scene at 4:55 am local time after fire personnel were responding to a “trapped patient”. However, once the emergency responders were able to escape the flaming Tesla Cybertruck. At this time, it is unknown what caused the crash to happen, but the car was completely mangled on the side of the road of a Los Angeles neighborhood.
Alijah Arenas was transported to the hospital in “serious condition” and ESPN would later report he was placed into an induced coma. Gilbert Arenas has not publicly stated anything since the news broke so thoughts are with the Arenas family at this time.
