Eddie George’s Bowling Green contract: salary, buyout, incentives
© Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

When Eddie George transitioned from coaching at Tennessee State to becoming the head coach at Bowling Green, the sports world took notice. After four seasons leading the Tigers, George’s move to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) brings fresh hope, not just for the Falcons, but for George’s wallet as well.

George’s base salary of $600,000 for his first season at Bowling Green is already impressive, with an annual increase of 2.5%. By the end of his five-year contract, he will be making a respectable $662,290, a solid figure by MAC standards. While this ranks similarly to his predecessor, Scot Loeffler, whose salary was $582,000, George’s compensation package also includes $100,000 in supplemental income, boosting his total earnings. For a coach who once earned millions during his NFL career, this salary, paired with performance bonuses, signals a lucrative future ahead.

Success on the field will be highly rewarded under George’s contract. His incentives include up to $32,500 if the Falcons win the MAC Championship, as well as substantial bonuses for postseason appearances and victories. While George’s ultimate goal remains the College Football Playoff, these bonuses align with his competitive spirit and drive to elevate the program. It’s clear George is not just about the paycheck—he’s setting the bar high for what he wants to achieve.

Not only is George walking into a strong financial deal, but Bowling Green has agreed to buy out the remainder of his contract at Tennessee State for up to $500,000. While there are terms for early departure, George’s commitment to long-term success at Bowling Green seems clear, with both the university and the coach showing a desire for stability.

Eddie George’s new chapter at Bowling Green is set to be a financially rewarding and career-defining journey. His combination of ambition, financial acumen, and coaching skill sets the stage for a prosperous future in the MAC—and beyond.

Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders get scathing evaluation from NFL coach

There was a time not too long ago that many believed Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders would be one of the first players picked in the 2025 NFL Draft. Indeed, the young quarterback himself, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, seemed to indicate last year that he believed he was going to be picked by the New York Giants, who have the third overall pick in the draft. “I’ve heard [the Giants] had ups and downs with Sanders through a process that encompassed the Giants assessing all the top 2025 quarterbacks, and even getting an early look at some of the guys who figure to go early in ’26,” Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated noted. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who were thought not to have a chance of drafting Sanders, had him in for a top-30 visit recently as his stock began to fall. They have the 21st overall pick in the draft. Why is Sanders seeing his NFL Draft stock fall? The question is why Sanders, once considered one of the three best players in the NFL Draft, suddenly plummeting down draft boards. The answer likely lies in the comments made by a current NFL assistant coach to insider Tom Pelissero. “The worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life," the coach told Pelissero. He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. But the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.” This past season, Sanders led the Big-12 in passing attempts (477), completions (353), completion percentage (74.0 percent- also led all of FBS), passing yards (4,134), touchdowns (37) and passer rating (168.2). There are concerns, though, that his game and attitude will not translate to the NFL, as is evident from the coach’s comments to Pelissero.

Patriots could be laying big smokescreen ahead of NFL Draft

The New England Patriots are widely viewed as being locked in on one specific player ahead of the NFL Draft, and that might be exactly what they want other teams to think. Just about every mock draft you can find has the Patriots selecting LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell with the fourth overall pick on Thursday night. Odds at most sportsbooks suggest Campbell being taken at No. 4 pick is a virtual lock, but what if New England is not the team that winds up on the clock at that spot? According to a Tuesday report from Mark Daniels of MassLive.com, the Patriots are not set on using the No. 4 pick. Mike Vrabel and company are open to trading back, though it is unclear if teams are willing to move up to a spot that would not guarantee them either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. There was also a report on Tuesday that several teams have inquired about trading up to either No. 2 or No. 3 overall. Some of those teams may have interest in star running back Ashton Jeanty, who should be available at No. 4. Maybe the Patriots are really in love with Campbell. However, if they like another player (say, star pass-rusher Jalon Walker) just as much, they could be leaking information about how much they want Campbell in order to make rival teams believe they are not budging from the fourth overall spot. That would, in theory, put New England in a stronger position if a team had interest in the pick. One thing is for certain: The Patriots need offensive line help. They have had one of the worst O-lines in football for several seasons, and drafting a left tackle to protect Drake Maye would be a wise decision. The big question is whether they can accomplish that later in the draft, which is something New England could very well be considering.

Cubs' Matt Mervis trade is already looking very bad

In late December, the Chicago Cubs made a rather head-scratching move by sending Matt Mervis, who was their No. 7 prospect as recently as 2023, to the Miami Marlins for Vidal Brujan. Mervis remained a top-30 prospect for the Cubs in 2024, but after one down year and two failed stints at the major league level, the Cubs seemingly threw in the towel. Mervis had enjoyed plenty of success in the minor leagues over the two seasons before 2024, hitting .309 with 36 home runs in 2022. But with Michael Busch at Mervis’ primary position of first base and Seiya Suzuki at DH, there wasn’t a place for him on the diamond. In that particular aspect, the trade makes sense. Brujan is a flexible defender who can play both infield and outfield positions. However, Brujan’s track record is rather concerning. Having earned the rank of MLB’s No. 50 prospect in 2021, Brujan’s viability as a major league hitter quickly became questionable. From 2021 to 2024, Brujan accrued 497 major league at-bats in which he posted a .189 average with two home runs. In fairness to Brujan, he could still be the star talent he was once projected to grow into, but the Cubs took a sizable risk in trading for him. This season, he is out of minor league options. If at any point he should be removed from the roster, perhaps to make room for Matt Shaw’s return, he would need to be designated for assignment. Trading Mervis for a player whom the Cubs intended to use as a backup utility player was also puzzling, but regardless of the risks, it seems the Cubs are already losing the trade. Having struggled through spring training and after spending a brief period on the IL, Brujan has come back and seen action in two games, totaling three at-bats. He is 1-for-3 with a double entering Tuesday. Mervis, on the other hand, has seen semi-regular action with the Marlins. In 53 at-bats, Mervis is slashing .226/.311/.585 with six home runs. Already, we are catching a glimpse of Mervis’ power potential starting to play in the major leagues. In retrospect, taking a sizable risk on Brujan might have been ill-advised. Prior to Opening Day, the Cubs were in need of at least one more quality starter. The season-ending injury to Justin Steele has only exacerbated this issue. It appears Mervis would have served the Cubs better as a part of a trade package for a pitcher rather than flipping him for a risky backup infielder. For now, we can only conclude that Miami won this trade.

NBA players have surprising pick for 'most overrated player'

NBA players have made an unexpected choice when asked their opinion in the league’s most overrated player. The Athletic on Tuesday announced the results of its annual anonymous player survey, which showed that Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton is the most popular pick for the title of “most overrated player.” 90 players voted on the question, and it should be noted that only 14.4% of them chose Haliburton, but that was enough to make him the most selected choice. Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert came in second with 10% of the vote, while Atlanta’s Trae Young, who formerly held the title, was third at 8.9%. Haliburton is a somewhat surprising choice because the perception does not really align with what the public thinks. The 25-year-old has established himself as a two-time All-Star who has averaged a double-double twice in his young career. This season, he averaged 18.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game as the clear No. 1 option for an Indiana team that went 50-32. Despite the plaudits, Haliburton does have his critics. Some ex-pros have accused him of talking too much trash, and he has formed a pretty strong rivalry with one team in particular. He was also stuck riding the bench for Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics, which probably did not help perceptions of him. Haliburton has shown in the past that he has no trouble shrugging off his critics. This title probably will not bother him too much.
