The Chicago Bears have signed free-agent tight end Durham Smythe to a one-year deal. Smythe was released earlier this offseason by the Miami Dolphins, and the Bears pounced on the opportunity to reunite Smythe with new head coach Ben Johnson.
With the signing of tight end Durham Smythe, it appears as the Chicago Bears’ commitment to Cole Kmet is stronger than it was in 2024. The new NFL year is still days away yet Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has been busy making over the roster.
The Bears continue to make moves on offense before the start of the new league year. Tight end Durham Smythe is headed to Chicago. Smythe was among the Dolphins’ recent salary cap cuts, and as a result he was allowed to join an interested team before the start of free agency.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Bears are signing TE Durham Smythe to a one-year deal. Smythe was free to sign right now unlike most free agents because he was released last month by Miami.

The Miami Dolphins announced they released CB Kendall Fuller, RB Raheem Mostert, and TE Durham Smythe on Friday. Releasing all three players frees up $7,883,353 in cap space and creates $9,068,668 in dead money, per OverTheCap. Fuller, 29, is a former third-round pick of Washington back in 2016.
